Te Deum by Jean Baptiste LullyWhile directing a Te Deum or traditional Latin hymn of thanksgiving to God, Italian born composer Jean Baptiste Lully struck himself on his foot with the heavy staff, which he was beating on the floor to indicate the tempo. An abscess developed, rapidly followed by gangrene, and Lully died of blood poisoning soon after.
